Summary

Obesity impairs left ventricular (LV) diastolic function, specifically prolonging isovolumic relaxation time, independent of LV mass. Early filling abnormalities in obesity are linked to increased LV mass.

Background:

  • Uncomplicated obesity may affect cardiac function.
  • Left ventricular (LV) diastolic dysfunction is a potential concern.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess if obesity is linked to systolic dysfunction or impaired LV filling.
  • To investigate the relationship between obesity, LV mass, and diastolic function.

Main Methods:

  • Doppler echocardiography in 40 obese and 40 normal-weight subjects.
  • Matched for age and sex, all subjects were normotensive and asymptomatic.
  • Evaluated LV mass, endocardial/midwall shortening, and diastolic filling parameters.

Main Results:

  • Obese subjects had higher LV mass index.

  • Prolonged isovolumic relaxation time in obese individuals was independent of LV mass.
  • Abnormalities in early diastolic filling (E velocity, deceleration time, E/A ratio) were observed in obese subjects.

    • Abnormalities in early passive filling flow in obesity correlate with increased LV mass.
    • Systolic function (shortening) was not significantly different between groups.
