Becoming a more politically active nurse

From the earliest days of nursing's history, the profession has been known for promotion of human rights, opposition to injustice and inequity, and advocacy on behalf of those who could not advocate for themselves. These accomplishments have been achieved through the efforts of politically active nurses within our ranks. This article establishes why nurses need to be involved politically, examines levels of political participation, considers barriers to such participation, and provides strategies for the nurse interested in becoming more politically involved.
