Pigmented basal cell carcinoma in Hispanics

Summary

Pigmented basal cell carcinoma (PBCC) is more common in Hispanic individuals. This study found PBCCs occurred twice as frequently in patients with Hispanic surnames, suggesting a higher incidence in this population.

Background:

Pigmented basal cell carcinoma (PBCC) can be misdiagnosed as melanoma.
PBCC is notably common within the Hispanic population.

Purpose of the Study:

To determine the prevalence of PBCC in Hispanic individuals.
To investigate potential ethnic variations in PBCC incidence.

Main Methods:

A randomized, blinded, retrospective study comparing histologic slides of basal cell carcinoma (BCC) from Hispanic and non-Hispanic patients.
Prospective phase involved questionnaires on ethnic background and skin type for patients with suspected BCC or PBCC.

Main Results:

Pigment was identified in BCCs twice as frequently among patients with Hispanic surnames compared to those with Northern European surnames.

In the prospective study, 66% of clinically diagnosed PBCCs were in Hispanic patients, versus 11% of nonpigmented BCCs (p < 0.01).

Conclusions:

PBCCs are more prevalent in Hispanic individuals with BCC.
This suggests a potentially increased incidence of PBCCs within the Hispanic population.
