Summary

Prostate specific antigen (PSA) is released from the prostate. The liver, not the kidneys or lungs, is the primary site for PSA metabolism, as shown by decreased PSA levels across the hepatic circulation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the primary site of prostate specific antigen (PSA) metabolism in vivo.
  • To investigate the role of hepatic, renal, and pulmonary circulation in PSA clearance.

  • Prospective study involving 12 male patients undergoing cardiac catheterization.
  • Selective blood sampling from various vascular sites including inferior vena cava (infra- and supra-hepatic), renal vein, superior vena cava, pulmonary artery, and femoral artery.
