Background:

  • Malignant pleural effusions (MPEs) cause significant symptoms and reduce quality of life.
  • Conventional inpatient management of MPEs can be resource-intensive.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the feasibility of ambulatory (outpatient) drainage and sclerotherapy for managing malignant pleural effusions.

Main Methods:

  • Nineteen patients with symptomatic MPEs underwent fluoroscopically guided catheter placement for drainage.
  • Sclerotherapy with bleomycin was administered when daily drainage decreased to below 100 mL.
  • Patients were monitored for symptomatic response, radiographic changes, and complications.
