Repeating amikacin doses after open heart surgery is unnecessary. Serum amikacin levels remain adequate four hours post-administration, even after cardiopulmonary bypass, indicating stable drug concentrations.

Background:

  • Amikacin is commonly administered during open heart surgery.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the necessity of administering amikacin immediately after cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) in open heart surgery patients.
  • To determine if serum amikacin levels fall below therapeutic concentrations after CPB.

Main Methods:

  • Ten patients undergoing open heart surgery were studied.
  • Serum amikacin levels were measured at multiple time points: pre-CPB, during CPB (30 and 60 minutes), post-CPB, and 4 hours after initial administration.
