[Winter depression--more than biology? A search for light in the darkness]
Abstract:
Winter depression has been much discussed lately in the media as a new diagnostic entity. Research on the topic is anchored in a clear biological framework, with reference to concepts like biological rhythm, serotonergic disturbance and light treatment. The author regards this framework of understanding as too limited, and suggests a need to include psychological and psychodynamic aspects in the theoretical understanding of the disease. A hypothesis is proposed that "winter depression" may conceal other diagnostic entities in individuals with inherent psychological vulnerability. In such cases, psychotherapy would probably be the treatment of choice.
