    Background:

    • Ischemic kidney injury is a significant clinical concern.
    • Urographic contrast media are widely used but can pose risks to renal function.
    • Assessing the safety of contrast agents in compromised kidneys is crucial.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the effect of meglumine diatrizoate on renal function in a canine model with pre-existing kidney ischemia.
    • To determine if contrast material exposure exacerbates the effects of ischemia on kidney function.

    Main Methods:

    • Eleven mongrel dogs underwent a 90-minute ischemic episode to the left kidney.
    • Dogs received either meglumine diatrizoate (4 cc/kg) or Ringer's lactate solution (control).
    • Creatinine clearance of the left kidney was measured acutely and at 72 hours post-administration.

    Main Results:

    • Statistical analysis indicated no significant deleterious effect of meglumine diatrizoate beyond that of the ischemic episode itself.

    • Further research may be warranted to confirm these findings in different models or clinical settings.
