Background:

  • Tumor invasion depth (Breslow thickness) is a key prognostic factor for stage I melanoma.
  • Thick melanomas (>4 mm) generally have a poor prognosis, but exceptions exist.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate volume-weighted mean nuclear volume (Vv) as a prognostic marker for thick primary melanomas (invasion >= 4.0 mm).
  • To determine if Vv can differentiate between thick melanomas that metastasize and those that do not.
