Mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) affects the elderly with widespread disease and poor treatment response. Despite indolent features, MCL acts aggressively, leading to short survival times.

Area of Science:

  • Hematology
  • Oncology
  • Clinical Research

Background:

  • Mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) is a distinct subtype of B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL).
  • Understanding MCL's incidence and clinical behavior is crucial for patient management.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze the incidence and behavior of MCL.
  • To compare MCL with other low- or intermediate-grade NHL subtypes.
  • To identify prognostic factors in MCL patients.

Main Methods:

  • Population-based registry analysis of 41 MCL patients.
  • Comparison with other NHL subtypes.
  • Assessment of clinical parameters, cyclin D1, and Ki-67 expression.

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • MCL constituted 3.7% of NHL cases, predominantly in elderly males (median age 68).
  • Most patients presented with advanced stage (IV) disease and bone marrow involvement.
  • Complete response rate was 32%, with a median overall survival of 31.5 months. Low Ki-67 (<10%) correlated with better survival.

Conclusions:

  • MCL is a disease of the elderly with advanced presentation and poor therapeutic outcomes.
  • Clinically, MCL behaves aggressively despite some indolent NHL features.
  • Proliferative index (Ki-67) is a significant prognostic indicator for overall survival in MCL.
