Area of Science:

  • Cardiology
  • Pediatric Medicine

Context:

  • Myocardial infarction (MI) is a critical cardiovascular condition.
  • Diagnosis in pediatric patients presents unique challenges compared to adults.

Purpose:

  • To analyze the etiology and clinical presentation of myocardial infarction in pediatric patients.
  • To highlight diagnostic difficulties and common MI locations in children.

Summary:

  • Twenty-nine pediatric patients with myocardial infarction (MI) were analyzed.
  • Bland-White-Garland syndrome was the most frequent cause (15 cases).
  • Other causes included heart muscle disease, aortic stenosis, progeria, endocarditis, and post-surgical complications. Etiology was unclear in two older children.

Impact:

  • Pediatric MI diagnosis requires careful clinical evaluation due to atypical symptoms, especially in infants.
  • Common MI locations in children include anteroseptal, lateral, subendocardial, and papillary muscle regions.
  • Increased awareness and utilization of diagnostic tools like ECG are crucial for improved pediatric MI detection.
