Area of Science:

  • Obstetrics and Gynecology
  • Perinatal Epidemiology

Context:

  • Study conducted in Managua, Nicaragua, analyzing 7,431 births from 1989-1991.
  • Investigated the relationship between maternal parity and newborn birthweight.

Purpose:

  • To examine the correlation between maternal parity and birthweight in a Nicaraguan population.
  • To identify specific parity ranges associated with decreased birthweight in male and female newborns.

Summary:

  • A positive correlation was observed between increasing maternal parity and birthweight up to parity 10.
  • Decreases in birthweight were noted for female newborns between parities 3-4 and 5-6, and for male newborns between parities 6-7 and 8-9.
  • Maternal age at first birth (primipara) averaged 20.7 years, with increases in age correlating with higher parity.

Impact:

  • Provides insights into birthweight variations related to maternal reproductive history in a specific demographic.
  • Highlights potential nuances in the parity-birthweight relationship that may inform prenatal care and risk assessment.
