Summary

This study found very high levels of total transforming growth factor beta 2 (TGF-beta 2) in normal human tears. Mature TGF-beta 2 levels were also measured, revealing insights into tear fluid composition.

  • The percentage of mature TGF-beta 2 in tears was low, averaging 0.9% (range: 0.4-1.3%).

  • Normal human tears contain exceptionally high concentrations of total TGF-beta 2.
  • The majority of TGF-beta 2 in tears exists in an inactive (total) form.
  • These findings represent the first report of very high total TGF-beta 2 levels in normal human tears.
