Virilization associated with choriocarcinoma

Summary

Choriocarcinoma can cause virilization in women due to human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) stimulating ovarian cells. This hormonal imbalance leads to hypertestosteronemia and masculinization, as seen in two fatal cases.

Area of Science:

  • Endocrinology
  • Oncology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Choriocarcinoma is a rare malignancy often associated with hormonal abnormalities.
  • Virilization in women can stem from various endocrine disorders, including androgen excess.

Observation:

  • Two autopsy-proven cases of virilization in women with metastatic choriocarcinoma are presented.
  • Patients exhibited elevated testosterone and human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) levels.
  • Ovarian pathology revealed hyperplasia of luteinized theca and lutein cells.

Findings:

  • Metastatic choriocarcinoma was confirmed at autopsy in both patients.
  • Hypertestosteronemia and virilization were observed in association with choriocarcinoma.
  • Long-standing hCG stimulation of the ovary is postulated to cause theca cell hyperplasia and hypertestosteronemia.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • This association highlights a potential mechanism for virilization in choriocarcinoma patients.
  • Understanding this link may improve diagnosis and management of rare endocrine-oncologic conditions.
  • Further research into hCG's role in ovarian hyperstimulation is warranted.
