Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Retinal Diseases
  • Vascular Abnormalities

Background:

  • Optic nerve aplasia is a rare congenital condition.
  • Posterior segment neovascularization is a serious complication often associated with retinal ischemia.

Observation:

  • The study examined three eyes in two patients diagnosed with optic nerve aplasia.
  • Clinical examination was performed to assess the posterior segment of the affected eyes.

Findings:

  • Posterior segment neovascularization was identified in one eye.
  • Progressive posterior segment neovascularization was observed in two of the studied eyes.

Implications:

  • Posterior segment neovascularization may be an associated finding in optic nerve aplasia.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Retinal ischemia or retinochoroidal disorganization could be the underlying cause of neovascularization in these cases.
