Area of Science:

  • Infectious Diseases
  • Neurology
  • Public Health

Context:

  • Brucellosis is endemic in Portugal, with a noted incidence increase in 1994.
  • Neurobrucellosis (NB) is a rare complication (5-10% of chronic infections) with varied presentations.
  • Accurate diagnosis of NB is challenging due to its heterogeneous clinical manifestations.

Purpose:

  • To analyze the clinical characteristics, diagnostic methods, treatments, and outcomes of neurobrucellosis patients.
  • To evaluate the differential diagnosis process for neurobrucellosis in a clinical setting.
  • To provide insights into managing this complex neurological manifestation of brucellosis.

Summary:

  • The study reviewed four years of inpatient clinical files from the neurology ward of St. António dos Capuchos Hospital.
