Summary

A rare ring-shaped lateral meniscus, previously unreported, was identified in a patient with an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) rupture. This case highlights an unusual meniscal anomaly associated with knee ligament injuries.

Area of Science:

  • Orthopedic Surgery
  • Sports Medicine
  • Anatomy

Background:

  • The lateral meniscus is a crucial component of knee joint stability.
  • Meniscal anomalies are uncommon, with ring-shaped morphology being exceedingly rare.
  • Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) ruptures often involve associated meniscal pathology.

Observation:

  • A unique case of a ring-shaped lateral meniscus was observed.
  • This anatomical variation was identified in conjunction with a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament.
  • The ring-shaped morphology presented diagnostic and surgical challenges.

Findings:

  • This study documents the first reported instance of a ring-shaped lateral meniscus.
  • The anomaly was found in a patient presenting with an acute ACL tear.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Surgical findings confirmed the ring configuration of the lateral meniscus.
  • Implications:

    • This case expands the known spectrum of meniscal anomalies.
    • Understanding such variations is vital for accurate diagnosis and effective surgical planning in knee injuries.
    • Further research may elucidate the etiology and clinical significance of ring-shaped menisci.
