Background:

  • Splenogonadal fusion is a rare congenital anomaly where the spleen is connected to the gonads.
  • This condition can present diagnostic challenges, particularly in pediatric patients.

Observation:

  • A retrospective review of 7 patients diagnosed with splenogonadal fusion between 1989 and 1994 was conducted across four institutions.
  • All cases were diagnosed intraoperatively during surgical exploration.

Findings:

  • Testicular salvage was achieved in 5 out of the 7 patients.
  • Gonadectomy was deemed appropriate in one intersex patient.

Implications:

  • Increased awareness of splenogonadal fusion among clinicians can facilitate prompt intraoperative diagnosis.
  • Timely diagnosis and surgical intervention are crucial for maximizing the potential for testicular salvage in affected individuals.
