Summary

Thymic hyperplasia, a rare condition after chemotherapy, can mimic tumor recurrence. This case shows it is a benign condition with a favorable outcome, suggesting it may be a good prognostic factor.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Pediatric Oncology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Chemotherapy for lymphoma can induce thymic hyperplasia, a rare post-treatment complication.
  • This condition can be mistaken for tumor recurrence, causing diagnostic challenges.

Observation:

  • A 12-year-old girl treated for cervicomediastinal lymphoma developed thymic hyperplasia.
  • Symptoms of dry cough and enlarged mediastinum initially suggested lymphoma recurrence.

Findings:

  • Histological examination of a tissue biopsy confirmed benign reactive thymic hyperplasia, not tumor recurrence.
  • The patient's condition resolved favorably with corticosteroid therapy, with no signs of recurrence.

Implications:

  • Thymic hyperplasia post-chemotherapy is a benign entity, not specific to certain treatments.
  • It is more common in children and young adults and appears to be a positive prognostic indicator.
