Purpose of the Study:

  • Three protocols were employed: intravenous infusion in rabbits, in vitro mixing with rabbit blood, and in vitro mixing with human blood.

  • In vitro studies showed that diatrizoate and ioxaglate increased potassium levels in rabbit blood, while iopamidol did not.
  • All tested contrast media significantly elevated potassium levels in human blood within 5 minutes, indicating a release of potassium into intravascular spaces.

Conclusions:

  • Iodinated contrast media are capable of increasing blood potassium levels.
  • The release of potassium by contrast media may contribute to adverse reactions observed in patients.
