    Summary

Most teen mothers do not marry or maintain relationships with the putative fathers of their children long-term. These findings highlight the need to include fathers in school-age mother programs.

    Area of Science:

    • Sociology
    • Public Health
    • Adolescent Medicine

    Background:

    • School-age mothers face unique challenges, including relationship stability with the father of their child.
    • Understanding the long-term involvement of putative fathers is crucial for supporting adolescent mothers and their children.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To examine the relationship dynamics between adolescent mothers and putative fathers over two years postpartum.
    • To assess the marital and cohabitation status of these couples and the fathers' involvement with their children.

    Main Methods:

    • A longitudinal study followed 180 school-age girls and their putative fathers for two years postpartum.
    • Data collection included tracking relationship status, marriage, and paternal involvement.

    Main Results:

    • At registration, the mean age of mothers was 15.6 and fathers was 18.5 years.
    • By 26 months postpartum, only 23% of mothers married the putative father, and 23% saw them regularly.
    • Only 25% of mothers who expected to marry the father actually did.

    Conclusions:

    • Long-term relationship stability between adolescent mothers and putative fathers is low.
    • Findings suggest that programs for school-age mothers should incorporate strategies to engage and support putative fathers.
    • Early expectations of marriage with the putative father did not often translate into reality.
