Summary

Low-level lead exposure may impair kidney function in the general population. While a weak association exists between lead exposure and blood pressure, it may not be causal and likely has no public health implications for hypertension.

Purpose of the Study:

  • Cross-sectional study of 965 men and 1016 women in Belgium assessing renal function (creatinine clearance) and blood lead levels.
  • Blood pressure measurements in 827 men and 821 women, excluding those on antihypertensive treatment.
  • Meta-analysis of 23 human studies (33,141 subjects) examining blood pressure and blood lead concentration.

Main Results:

  • Creatinine clearance was negatively correlated with blood lead levels in both sexes.
  • A tenfold increase in blood lead was associated with a 10-13 ml/min reduction in creatinine clearance.
  • Systolic blood pressure was negatively correlated with blood lead in men; a meta-analysis showed a weak positive association between blood lead and both systolic and diastolic pressure.

Conclusions:

  • Lead exposure may impair renal function in the general population.
  • A weak, potentially non-causal association exists between lead exposure and blood pressure.
  • The public health implications of this weak association regarding hypertension are likely minimal.
