    Area of Science:

    • Public Health
    • Sociology
    • Women's Health

    Background:

    • Lesbian health is an under-researched area within Canadian public health.
    • Understanding the specific health needs of lesbians is crucial for equitable healthcare delivery.
    • Previous health surveys have not adequately captured the experiences of lesbian populations.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To identify and define the unique healthcare requirements of Canadian lesbians.
    • To compare the health behaviors and needs of lesbians with the general Canadian female population.

    Main Methods:

    • A survey was administered to 186 self-identified lesbians attending a softball league meeting in Toronto.
    • The questionnaire covered demographics, healthcare utilization, lifestyle habits, preventive care, mental health, and physical health.
    • Survey data were compared with national health survey results from 1991 and 1986.

    Main Results:

    • Lesbians surveyed were predominantly young, white, and middle-class.
    • While visiting similar healthcare professionals, their reasons for visits differed from the general population.
    • Higher rates of smoking, alcohol, and caffeine use were observed, with less knowledge of healthy diets.
    • Lesbians reported less frequent Pap smears and breast self-examinations but comparable blood pressure checks.
    • A high incidence of mental health issues and a prevalence of non-traditional support systems were noted.
    • Lesbians experienced fewer gynecologic complaints but similar rates of common chronic illnesses.

    Conclusions:

    • Lesbians do not have unique illnesses but possess distinct healthcare needs compared to the general population.
    • Canadian family physicians must acknowledge lesbians as a key demographic within family practice.
    • Awareness of these specific health concerns is vital for providing appropriate and tailored care to lesbian patients.
