Human papilloma virus (HPV) was detected in three esophageal squamous papilloma cases. These benign tumors, though rare, warrant preventive removal due to potential malignant transformation.

Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Oncology
  • Virology

Background:

  • Esophageal squamous papillomas are rare, benign tumors with unclear pathogenesis.
  • Potential etiological factors include local irritation and human papilloma virus (HPV).

Observation:

  • Three patients (37, 58, 68 years) incidentally presented with distal esophageal papillomatous lesions.
  • Microscopic examination revealed squamous papilloma with parakeratosis; two patients showed poikilocytosis, suggesting HPV infection.

Findings:

  • Human papilloma virus (HPV) was indicated as a causative agent in esophageal squamous papillomas.
  • The presence of viral antigen or DNA has been demonstrated in similar studies.

Implications:

  • Esophageal squamous papillomas, despite being benign, carry a risk of malignant transformation.

  • Preventive endoscopic removal is recommended for these lesions.
