Area of Science:

  • Genetics
  • Otolaryngology
  • Cytogenetics

Context:

  • Otosclerosis is a common cause of conductive hearing loss.
  • Stapedectomy is a surgical procedure to treat otosclerosis.
  • The role of chromosomal abnormalities in otosclerosis is not well-established.

Purpose:

  • To investigate chromosomal abnormalities in patients with otosclerosis using G banding.
  • To determine if G banding can identify chromosomal abnormalities in otosclerosis patients.

Summary:

  • A cytogenetic study was performed on 50 patients (32 females, 18 males) with otosclerosis who underwent stapedectomy.
  • G banding technique was employed to analyze the karyotype of the patients.
  • No chromosomal abnormalities were detected in the karyotype of the studied patients.
