Constructing arousal profiles for vegetative state patients--a preliminary report

Summary

This study introduces arousal profiles, a new method to assess patient arousal levels by observing behaviors before and after sensory stimulation. The findings suggest this technique can reveal changes in arousal for patients in a vegetative state.

Current methods may not fully capture dynamic changes in arousal levels.
Traumatic brain injury can lead to prolonged states of impaired consciousness.
