Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the safety and effectiveness of ankle arthroscopy as a diagnostic and therapeutic tool.
  • To evaluate patient outcomes and complication rates in an initial series of ankle arthroscopy procedures.

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective review of 24 patients who underwent ankle arthroscopy between 1991 and 1993.
  • Objective scoring system evaluating pain, swelling, stiffness, limp, and activity level at an average 26-month follow-up.
  • Mini-arthrotomy was performed in 18 cases based on arthroscopic findings.

Main Results:

  • Twenty-two patients (92%) reported good or excellent outcomes.
  • Two complications occurred: transient tarsal tunnel syndrome and reflex sympathetic dystrophy.
  • No neurovascular complications were reported.

Conclusions:
