Area of Science:

  • Psychiatry
  • Pharmacology

Background:

  • Serotonergic agents are emerging as effective treatments for premenstrual symptoms.
  • Previous small trials suggest efficacy for premenstrual symptoms.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To gather pilot data on the efficacy of fluvoxamine for premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PDD).

Main Methods:

  • An open-label study evaluated 10 women meeting DSM-IV criteria for PDD.
  • Subjects took daily fluvoxamine for two menstrual cycles, with doses adjusted to 100 mg/day by week 8.
  • Daily symptom reports (DSRs) and Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression scores were primary outcome measures.

Main Results:

  • Mean premenstrual DSR scores significantly improved at 4 and 8 weeks compared to baseline.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Key symptom improvements included irritability, anxiety, feeling out of control, and decreased interest.
  • Sixty percent of subjects achieved at least a 50% reduction in DSR scores; depression scores also decreased significantly.
  • Common side effects like insomnia, fatigue, dry mouth, and nausea were generally mild and transient.
  • Conclusions:

    • Pilot data suggest fluvoxamine is a promising treatment for premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PDD).
    • Further controlled trials over longer durations are necessary to confirm efficacy.
