Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and characterize a novel, nonsurgical rabbit model for enteric Shigella infection.

  • Rabbits underwent a conditioning procedure including fasting, tetracycline, cimetidine, sodium bicarbonate, and tincture of opium.
  • Rabbits were orogastrically inoculated with Shigella flexneri 2a.

  • All inoculated rabbits developed diarrhea, lethargy, or became moribund within 20 hours.
