    Summary

    Ingesting Cestrum diurnum leaves, which mimic vitamin D, caused severe hypercalcemia and bone disease in pigs. This plant bypasses normal vitamin D regulation, leading to rapid intoxication.

    Background:

    • Cestrum diurnum contains a principle similar to 1,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol.
    • Vitamin D intoxication is a concern in animal nutrition.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the effects of Cestrum diurnum ingestion in normal and hyperparathyroid pigs.
    • To compare the toxicity of Cestrum diurnum with vitamin D3 intoxication.

    Main Methods:

    • Pigs (normal and hyperparathyroid) were fed diets with 3% Cestrum diurnum leaf meal for 10 weeks.
    • Biochemical parameters (plasma calcium, phosphorus, phosphatase) and anatomical changes were monitored.

    Main Results:

    • Cestrum diurnum ingestion led to hypercalcemia, hypophosphatasemia, decreased growth, and skeletal lesions (osteopenia, osteonecrosis).
    • Dystrophic calcinosis affected multiple organs; parathyroid atrophy was observed.
    • Hyperparathyroid pigs showed more rapid and severe responses than normal pigs.

    Conclusions:

    • Cestrum diurnum causes rapid vitamin D-like intoxication in pigs by bypassing normal regulatory mechanisms.
    • The plant's effects mimic vitamin D3 toxicity but occur more promptly due to altered metabolism.
