Eosinophilic gastroenteritis with esophageal involvement

    Summary

    This study reports the first case of eosinophilic gastroenteritis with esophageal involvement. The patient presented with asthma, hay fever, and esophageal spasm, showing characteristic eosinophilic infiltration in biopsies.

    Background:

    • Asthma and hay fever are common allergic conditions.
    • Esophageal spasm can be a challenging diagnosis.

    Observation:

    • A patient with a history of asthma and hay fever presented with esophageal spasm.
    • Esophageal biopsies showed eosinophilic infiltration and hyperplasia.
    • Small bowel biopsies revealed a flat mucosa with eosinophilic infiltration, unresponsive to a gluten-free diet.

    Findings:

    • The patient was diagnosed with eosinophilic gastroenteritis affecting the esophagus.
    • This represents the first reported case of this condition with esophageal involvement.

    Implications:

    • Highlights the potential for eosinophilic gastroenteritis to manifest with esophageal symptoms.
    • Suggests considering eosinophilic gastrointestinal disorders in patients with allergic histories and unexplained esophageal or gastrointestinal issues.
