    Background:

    • Schizophrenia is often characterized by emotional deficits.
    • Pain adaptation, the ability to adjust to persistent pain, is not well understood in schizophrenia.
    • Sensation-seeking behavior is linked to risk-taking and emotional regulation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To compare pain adaptation rates in individuals with high versus low emotional deficits in schizophrenia.
    • To investigate the relationship between sensation-seeking traits and pain adaptation in this population.

    Main Methods:

    • Assessed pain adaptation using electrical stimulation pain thresholds.
    • Measured pain thresholds at four intervals post-shock administration within a learning task.
    • Administered various sensation-seeking scales, including General Sensation-Seeking and Thrill/Adventure Seeking, and the Anhedonia scale.

    • Thrill and adventure seeking appear to play a role in modulating pain adaptation in individuals with schizophrenia.
    • Further research is warranted to explore the neurobiological mechanisms underlying these associations.
