Summary

Impulsivity strongly predicts borderline personality disorder (BPD) outcomes, with defensive functioning playing a minor role. This research refines the understanding of impulsivity in BPD for improved future studies.

Area of Science:

  • Psychiatry
  • Clinical Psychology

Background:

  • Impulsivity is a core feature in Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD).
  • Previous research indicates impulsivity predicts BPD symptom severity and social functioning.
  • The role of defensive functioning in this relationship requires further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To replicate findings on impulsivity predicting DIB(R) scores and social functioning in BPD.
  • To examine the additional predictive value of other measures, including defensive functioning, on BPD outcomes.
  • To enhance the definition of impulsivity within the context of BPD.

Main Methods:

  • Correlational and regression analyses were conducted.
  • Data were drawn from 57 participants in a 7-year longitudinal study of BPD.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Impulsivity and defensive functioning were assessed as predictor variables for DIB(R) and SAS-SR scores.
  • Main Results:

    • Strong correlations were observed between impulsivity and defensive functioning.
    • Impulsivity remained a significant predictor of DIB(R) and social functioning.
    • Defensive functioning provided only a minor additional contribution to the regression models.
    • Anger emerged as a significant predictor only when other variables were excluded.

    Conclusions:

    • The findings support a nuanced understanding of impulsivity in BPD.
    • Results may inform more precise definitions of impulsivity relevant to BPD.
    • This research can guide future studies on the etiology, treatment, and prognosis of BPD.
