Summary

Fast gradient-echo (GE) MRI, but not spin-echo (SE) MRI, clearly visualized aortic vegetations in two patients. This magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technique aids in diagnosing infective endocarditis.

Observation:

  • Two patients with suspected aortic valve vegetations underwent MRI.
  • Standard spin-echo (SE) sequences were compared with fast gradient-echo (GE) sequences (Fastcard).

Findings:

  • Aortic vegetations were not visible using SE MRI.
  • Fast GE imaging (Fastcard) clearly depicted vegetations as low-signal areas on valve leaflets against bright flowing blood.

Implications:

  • This technique can clarify echocardiographic findings in infective endocarditis.
