Area of Science:

  • Obstetrics and Gynecology
  • Reproductive Health
  • Epidemiology

Background:

  • Spontaneous abortion is a significant concern in reproductive health.
  • Understanding the incidence and contributing factors is crucial for maternal care.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the incidence of spontaneous abortion.
  • To investigate the relationship between spontaneous abortion and maternal age, profession, education, and income.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective cohort study involving 999 patients registered at an antenatal care unit.
  • Data collected from July 1, 1992, with exclusions for induced abortions or inability to contact.

Main Results:

  • A spontaneous abortion incidence of 6.9% was observed in 64 out of 999 patients.
  • No statistically significant relationship was found between spontaneous abortion and maternal age, profession, education level, or income.

Conclusions:

  • The observed incidence of spontaneous abortion was notably low compared to previous studies.
  • Further research with larger populations is recommended to definitively conclude on socioeconomic factors influencing spontaneous abortion.
