    Summary

    Bone islands, benign bone lesions, were studied in 189 subjects over 23 years. Findings show no link to radiation dose, with most bone islands appearing and changing during observation.

    Background:

    • Bone islands are common benign bone lesions.
    • Their natural history and association with radiation exposure are not fully understood.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the prevalence, incidence, and changes in bone islands over time.
    • To determine any association between bone islands and atomic bomb radiation dose.
    • To understand the metabolic activity and growth patterns of bone islands.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective review of radiographs from 143 Adult Health Study participants and 46 non-sample subjects over 23 years.
    • Analysis of bone island characteristics including site, size, age at detection, and changes over time.
    • Correlation with atomic bomb radiation dose.

    Main Results:

    • 209 bone islands were identified in 189 subjects.
    • Most bone islands appeared during the observation period; 26 showed changes in size or disappeared.
    • No association was found between bone islands and atomic bomb radiation dose.
    • Bone islands were most frequent in the pelvis and femora, but also common in ribs.
    • Five bone islands in adolescents grew proportionally to bone, suggesting metabolic participation.

    • Atomic bomb radiation dose is not associated with the development or progression of bone islands.
    • Bone islands may participate metabolically in bone growth, particularly in adolescents.
    • Radiographic differentiation from osteoblastic metastases is crucial.
