    Summary

    Uterine prolapse can cause urinary tract obstruction. However, routine screening with intravenous urography (IVU) is not necessary for all prolapse patients, only those with complete procidentia.

    Background:

    • Uterine prolapse is a condition where pelvic organs descend due to weakened pelvic floor muscles.
    • Hydronephrosis and hydroureter, indicative of urinary tract obstruction, have been anecdotally linked to advanced uterine prolapse.
    • The necessity of routine screening for urinary tract obstruction in all uterine prolapse patients remains unclear.

    Observation:

    • A study investigated the incidence of urinary tract obstruction in patients awaiting surgery for uterine prolapse.
    • Thirty-seven patients with varying degrees of uterine prolapse underwent intravenous urography (IVU) and blood urea estimation.
    • The study aimed to determine if universal screening for urinary tract obstruction is warranted in uterine prolapse cases.

    Findings:

    • No instances of ureteric obstruction were detected in the 37 patients evaluated.
    • The absence of obstruction was presumed to be due to the predominance of lesser degrees of uterine prolapse in the study cohort.
    • The findings suggest that not all patients with uterine prolapse require routine IVU.

    Implications:

    • Intravenous urography (IVU) for detecting urinary tract obstruction should be reserved for patients with complete uterine procidentia.
    • This approach can help optimize diagnostic resource allocation and avoid unnecessary procedures.
    • Further research may explore specific risk factors or symptomology that warrant IVU in uterine prolapse patients.
