Nursing dependency scoring: measuring the total workload

This article discusses the issues surrounding the measurement of nursing work. The authors highlight a Royal College of Nursing (RCN) survey of critical care units which identified the extent of the use of patient scoring systems. The authors also examine the implications of using scoring systems to determine nursing workload and estimate staffing requirements.
