Area of Science:

  • Cardiology
  • Endocrinology

Background:

  • Cardiac tamponade is a critical condition often associated with malignancy.
  • Pericardial effusions are a common finding in cardiac tamponade.

Observation:

  • Two cases of cardiac tamponade were initially suspected to be secondary to malignancy.
  • Thyroid function tests were performed in these cases.

Findings:

  • Primary hypothyroidism was confirmed as the cause of pericardial effusion in both cases.
  • Hypothyroidism can present with significant pericardial effusions leading to cardiac tamponade.

Implications:

  • Hypothyroidism should be included in the differential diagnosis for unexplained pericardial effusion and cardiac tamponade.
  • Early diagnosis of hypothyroidism can prevent life-threatening cardiac complications.
