Area of Science:

  • Orthopedic Surgery
  • Minimally Invasive Procedures

Background:

  • Carpal tunnel syndrome is a common condition causing hand numbness and weakness.
  • Traditional carpal tunnel release involves open surgery.
  • Endoscopic techniques offer a minimally invasive alternative.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To introduce and describe the technique of endoscopically assisted carpal tunnel release.
  • To highlight the pioneering work in this surgical approach.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized a specific set of instruments designed by James C. Y. Chow, MD.
  • Performed the first documented cases in September 1987.
  • Published the first US author introduction to the endoscopic technique.

Main Results:

  • The technique has been widely adopted and practiced for approximately five years.
  • Demonstrated the feasibility and initial application of endoscopic carpal tunnel release.

Conclusions:

  • Endoscopically assisted carpal tunnel release represents a significant development in surgical treatment.
  • Potential for serious complications exists but can be mitigated through proper technique and management.
