Summary

Gallbladder cancer in situ can be associated with cholesterosis, making diagnosis challenging. Differentiating cholesterol polyps from early gallbladder cancer with cholesterosis requires careful histological examination.

Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Surgical Pathology
  • Oncology

Background:

  • Cholesterosis, characterized by cholesterol accumulation in the gallbladder wall, is often associated with gallstones.
  • Distinguishing benign cholesterol polyps from malignant gallbladder lesions can be difficult.

Observation:

  • Two cases of gallbladder carcinoma in situ associated with cholesterosis are presented.
  • Histological examination revealed mucinous carcinoma and papillary adenocarcinoma in situ, both with coexisting cholesterosis.

Findings:

  • In both cases, the gallbladder cancer appeared to arise from or alongside areas of cholesterosis.
  • The distribution suggests that gallbladder adenoma or carcinoma may precede the development of cholesterosis within the tumor epithelium.

Implications:

  • Cholesterol polyps of the gallbladder require careful evaluation to rule out underlying malignancy.
  • Histological assessment is crucial for differentiating cholesterol polyps from gallbladder cancer with cholesterosis.
