Familial Kaposi's sarcoma is rare. This study reports a case of Kaposi's sarcoma in siblings without human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) risk factors, highlighting a potential genetic link.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Dermatology
  • Genetics

Background:

  • Familial Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) is exceptionally uncommon.
  • Kaposi's sarcoma is an opportunistic tumor associated with human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8).

Observation:

  • An 85-year-old man presented with Kaposi's sarcoma lesions on his feet.
  • His 84-year-old sister had similar lower extremity lesions.
  • Both siblings were lifelong US residents of English/German descent and HIV-negative.

Findings:

  • Histologic examination revealed vascular slits, hemorrhage, and spindle cell aggregates in both patients' lesions.
  • The absence of typical KS risk factors (including HIV) in both siblings suggests a non-traditional etiology.

Implications:

Related Experiment Videos

  • This familial occurrence, despite the lack of HIV, suggests a potential genetic predisposition or alternative transmission routes for Kaposi's sarcoma.
  • Further research into genetic factors may be warranted for understanding rare familial KS cases.
