    Summary

    Patients with sinus node dysfunction exhibit prolonged and nonuniform atrial refractoriness, increasing arrhythmia risk. These abnormalities persist with pacing and are linked to underlying atrial disease, not solely atrial fibrillation/flutter.

    Background:

    • Atrial fibrillation/flutter (AFF) is often associated with bradycardia.
    • Sinus node dysfunction (SND) is a common cause of bradycardia.
    • Abnormal atrial refractoriness is a potential mechanism for AFF.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate whether abnormal atrial refractoriness contributes to AFF in patients with bradycardia.
    • To compare atrial refractoriness between patients with SND and controls.

    Main Methods:

    • Measured refractory periods at three right atrial sites in 17 SND patients and 16 controls.
    • Compared refractoriness during sinus rhythm and atrial pacing.
    • Assessed dispersion of refractoriness.
