Summary

Twelve months of alpha interferon (alpha IFN) therapy for chronic hepatitis C demonstrated superior efficacy over six months. Patient response to alpha IFN treatment was significantly influenced by the specific hepatitis C virus (HCV) genotype.

Background:

  • Chronic hepatitis C treatment with alpha interferon (alpha IFN) often leads to disease relapse.
  • Optimal alpha IFN therapy regimens and the influence of hepatitis C virus (HCV) genotypes remain subjects of investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the efficacy of different alpha IFN treatment regimens in chronic hepatitis C patients.
  • To investigate the correlation between HCV genotypes and treatment response.

Main Methods:

  • 160 patients with chronic hepatitis C received varying doses and durations of lymphoblastoid alpha IFN.
  • Biochemical (ALT levels) and virological (HCV RNA) responses were monitored.
  • HCV genotyping was performed using Okamoto's method; statistical analysis included Chi-square and logistic regression.

  • Sustained biochemical response rates were significantly higher with 12 months of therapy compared to 6 months, irrespective of dosage.
