Summary

Pregnant individuals with asthma face risks from acute attacks, but proper anti-inflammatory treatment significantly reduces exacerbation frequency. Mild, promptly treated asthma attacks during pregnancy do not negatively impact pregnancy outcomes or newborn health.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the impact of acute asthma attacks during pregnancy on pregnancy course, delivery, and neonatal health.
  • To identify undertreatment as a potential cause of asthma exacerbations in pregnant individuals.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective follow-up and treatment of 504 pregnant asthmatic subjects.
  • Comparison of data from 47 patients with asthma attacks against 457 asthmatics without attacks and 237 healthy controls.

Main Results:

  • 17% of pregnant asthmatics initially untreated with inhaled corticosteroids experienced acute attacks, versus 4% of those on treatment.
  • No significant differences were found in gestation length, labor duration, postpartum hemorrhage, birth weight, malformations, or neonatal complications.
  • Inadequate anti-inflammatory treatment increased the risk of acute asthma attacks during pregnancy.

Conclusions:

  • Inadequate inhaled anti-inflammatory treatment during pregnancy elevates the risk of acute asthma attacks.
  • Mild asthma attacks in pregnancy, when treated promptly, do not adversely affect pregnancy, delivery, or infant health.
