Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Retinal Surgery
  • Ocular Trauma

Background:

  • Retained intraocular cilia are exceptionally rare findings.
  • Ocular perforations can lead to unusual intraocular foreign bodies.
  • Successful surgical repair of ocular trauma is crucial.

Observation:

  • A 22-year-old male presented with decreased vision and metamorphopsia one month post-ocular perforation repair.
  • Ophthalmoscopy revealed two cilia embedded in the posterior retina, superotemporal to the fovea.
  • Anterior segment examination showed a sutured limbal tear and iris coloboma.

Findings:

  • Vitrectomy successfully removed the intraocularly embedded cilia.
  • Endolaser application was performed following cilia removal.
  • The patient's vision and visual quality improved post-operatively.

Implications:

  • This case demonstrates that cilia can become embedded within the retina after ocular perforation.
  • Transvitreal removal is a viable and effective treatment for intraocularly embedded cilia.
  • Advanced vitreoretinal surgical techniques offer solutions for rare intraocular foreign body complications.
