Area of Science:

  • Orthopedics
  • Sports Medicine
  • Pediatric Sports Medicine

Background:

  • Apophysitis of the acromion is a less common overuse injury affecting young athletes.
  • It involves inflammation or stress on the growth plate of the acromion, a part of the shoulder blade.

Observation:

  • Three adolescent athletes (two males, one female, aged 12-14) presented with shoulder pain during athletic activity.
  • Symptoms included localized tenderness and warmth at the acromion, with pain exacerbated by shoulder movement.
  • No rest pain or impact on daily activities was reported.

Findings:

  • Radiographic examination revealed sclerosis and irregularity of the acromion's secondary ossification center.
  • Bone scintigraphy indicated increased tracer uptake in the affected acromial region.
  • All three patients were treated conservatively with successful, albeit gradual, recovery.

Implications:

  • Conservative management appears effective for apophysitis of the acromion in young athletes.
  • Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment can lead to favorable outcomes, allowing return to sports.
  • Further research into the biomechanics and prevention of this condition is warranted.
