Summary

This study reports on three young athletes diagnosed with apophysitis of the acromion, a shoulder condition causing pain during sports. Conservative treatment led to satisfactory recovery for these athletes.

Background:

Apophysitis of the acromion is a less common overuse injury affecting young athletes.
It involves inflammation or stress on the growth plate of the acromion, a part of the shoulder blade.

Observation:

Three adolescent athletes (two males, one female, aged 12-14) presented with shoulder pain during athletic activity.
Symptoms included localized tenderness and warmth at the acromion, with pain exacerbated by shoulder movement.
No rest pain or impact on daily activities was reported.

Findings:

Radiographic examination revealed sclerosis and irregularity of the acromion's secondary ossification center.
Bone scintigraphy indicated increased tracer uptake in the affected acromial region.
All three patients were treated conservatively with successful, albeit gradual, recovery.

Implications:

Conservative management appears effective for apophysitis of the acromion in young athletes.
Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment can lead to favorable outcomes, allowing return to sports.
Further research into the biomechanics and prevention of this condition is warranted.
