Area of Science:

  • Psychiatry
  • Clinical Psychology
  • Rehabilitation

Background:

  • Schizophrenia treatment often involves psychotherapy and skills training.
  • Evidence for the efficacy of these interventions is mixed and requires further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review the impact of psychotherapies and psychosocial skills training on clinical and social outcomes in schizophrenia.
  • To identify limitations in current research and suggest future directions.

Main Methods:

  • Systematic review of controlled trials examining individual and group psychotherapies.
  • Analysis of studies on psychosocial skills training models.

Main Results:

  • Few controlled psychotherapy trials exist, with methodological limitations hindering generalizability.
  • Reality-oriented approaches may be more effective than dynamic, insight-oriented therapies.
  • Psychosocial skills can be trained and maintained, but generalization to real-world settings requires further study.

Conclusions:

  • Further research is needed to develop and evaluate disorder-specific models for schizophrenia.
  • Investigating the real-world applicability of trained psychosocial skills is crucial.
