Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Mycology
  • Infectious Diseases

Background:

  • Scleritis, an inflammation of the sclera, can be caused by various factors, including trauma and infections.
  • Fungal infections of the eye, particularly Aspergillus species, can lead to severe ocular morbidity.

Observation:

  • A 67-year-old male presented with a scleral ulcer following trauma to the right eye.
  • Biopsy and cultures confirmed Aspergillus fumigatus as the causative agent of the scleritis.

Findings:

  • Initial treatment with oral fluconazole and topical amphotericin B was insufficient to control the Aspergillus fumigatus scleritis.
  • A combination of cryotherapy and dura mater grafting led to successful resolution of the infection.

Implications:

Related Experiment Videos

  • This case highlights the importance of considering fungal etiology in severe scleritis, especially after ocular trauma.
  • The successful management with cryotherapy and dura mater grafting suggests these as viable therapeutic options for refractory fungal scleritis.
