The psychiatric clinical specialist in the home care setting
1Psychiatric Home Care Program, Visiting Nurse Association of Hudson Valley, Mount Kisco, Pace University, Pleasantville, New York, USA.
Abstract:
The Psychiatric Clinical Specialist (PCS) in home care is a richly diverse clinical role that combines all aspects of a traditional Clinical Nurse Specialist with the challenging components of a Case Manager. Independent functioning, creativity, and dedication are vital to the success of such an endeavor. The rewards are many, including the opportunity to provide holistic nursing care to clients and their families within the natural setting of the home. As more clients return home after shortened hospital stays, the need for ongoing research to demonstrate the effectiveness of home care for the psychiatric client is an urgent issue to be addressed. The advanced practice PCS in home care is in a vital position to take on this cause.
